How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Pennsylvania
1: Register for the state’s medical marijuana program at medicalmarijuana.pa.gov.
To apply for a Pennsylvania MMJ card, you must first register online on the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s website. The registration form will require your contact information and some proof of PA residency. You can use a driver's license or ID card as proof of residency, but make sure it has your current address. The system will assign you a patient ID number. Be sure to save it and bring it to your appointment.
2: Meet with a certified doctor
Next, you must obtain certification for a medical marijuana card from a doctor who has been certified by the DOH. To do so, you can schedule a telehealth appointment with one of the Sanctuary's medical marijuana doctors. Your appointment will last 10 to 15 minutes, and you’ll be able to discuss any questions you may have about medical marijuana.
If your doctor determines that you qualify for medical cannabis treatment, you’ll receive your certification that same day.
3: Complete your registration on the Department of Health’s website.
Once your doctor has verified your certification with the state, you can complete your registration on the DOH’s website. You must log into the same account you used to register and pay a $50 fee. When the DOH receives your registration fee, it will mail your card to the address on your driver's license/identification card.
How to Renew Your Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card
To continue purchasing cannabis from dispensaries in Pennsylvania, you must update your certification every 12 months. Fortunately, it's simple to renew your medical marijuana card in PA–all you need to do is get an updated certificate and pay the renewal fee.
The state requires a doctor's reassessment for all MMJ card renewals. Once you receive an email notifying you of your card’s impending expiration (usually 60 days prior to its expiration date), you can book an appointment with one of the Sanctuary's medical marijuana doctors online. This appointment will be similar to your initial medical cannabis consultation.
Additionally, 30 days before your renewal payment is due, the Department of Health will send you another email. You can then log into your account and ensure that you have a valid payment method on file. If you pay the $50 renewal charge within 30 days of receiving this notification, your card will not expire.
Be sure to confirm the address on your account is correct so that when the state mails you a new MMJ card, it reaches you.
How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in PA
Medical marijuana caregivers in Pennsylvania are individuals who register with the state's medical marijuana program to obtain medicinal cannabis on behalf of children, homebound adults, and/or people with disabilities. Registered caregivers must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid PA driver's license or state-issued ID.
All caregivers must register with the Department of Health. To set up your account, you’ll have to provide the name of the patient you will be supporting and their program ID number, as well as your name and address.
Next, you’ll submit to a criminal background check through the vendor provided by the state. Individuals who have been convicted of a criminal offense for selling or possessing narcotics or controlled substances within the last five years are ineligible to become caretakers. Background checks can take up to six weeks to complete following your fingerprinting appointment.
Once you pass the background check, the state will contact you via email, and then you’ll be able to pay the $50 registration fee. Medical marijuana cards for caregivers have an annual expiration date.

As a caregiver, you can only enter dispensaries and purchase marijuana if your account is linked to a registered patient's. If you act as an adult's caregiver, they can authorize you to purchase cannabis products on their behalf by designating you as such on their online account. Minors and individuals with disabilities must register with a caregiver before becoming patients.
Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card Conditions
Medical marijuana became legal in Pennsylvania with the passage of the Medical Marijuana Act in 2016. This law allows any patient with a qualifying condition to apply for the state’s medical marijuana program. Patients cannot cultivate their own cannabis, and recreational marijuana remains illegal in Pennsylvania.
Caregivers who are 21 or older can also apply for the Pennsylvania medical cannabis program. To be approved for the program, these caregivers must first pass a background check and provide additional documentation. A patient can designate up to two caregivers, and each caregiver can oversee up to five medical marijuana patients.
