Th oral medications for ED are called PDE-5 inhibitors which are potent vasodilators that enhance the blood flow to the erectile tissue within the penis. They are typically taken 30 mins - 1 hour prior to planned activity. Their effect enhance the firmness of an erection as well as the duration. While all of the PDE-5 inhibitors cause an similar amount of firmness, the duration of the erection can vary. Cialis and Tadalafil also known as “the weekender” can provide an erection for up to 36 hours should the opportunity arise the day or two after taking the medication.

Risks and Side Effects

Virtually all prescription drugs have potential side effects, but their duration and severity can vary. The most common side effects of sexual dysfunction medications are headache, flushing, stuffy or runny nose, facial flushing and back pain. These medications can also lower your blood pressure. Taking nitrate medications in addition to these medications can be deadly so speak with your physician or provider to find out if this is safe for you.

An erection lasting over four hours is possible, but also rare. You must seek immediate medical attention if you experience an erection that is that prolonged and/or painful, a condition also known as a priapism. Left untreated, this can permanently damage the penis.
